A little help, along the way.

Start with
your plate.

A guide to the iPhone app and its web companion.

Add a plate when you have one.

You can use Platd without a car or a plate. Create an account to send messages, receive replies, and connect with people. Claiming a plate adds another way to reach you.

  1. Create an account or sign in, then open My plates.
  2. Choose the claim action. Enter the region and plate number using the capture options or keyboard.
  3. Check every character. Optionally choose the design shown on your plate.
  4. Confirm that you drive the vehicle and have permission to use it, then claim it.

You do not need to be named on the title. You can claim more than one plate on the same account; all reach your one inbox. Each plate belongs to one account at a time. If someone else drives your car, messages to its plate still reach your account. If someone has already claimed the plate, use the review process below.

Three ways to get the number right.

Camera
Hold the plate in view while safely parked. Let the camera fill the number, then check the region and every character. If the read is unclear, correct it or use the keyboard.
Voice on iPhone
Speak the plate and confirm the result. You may need to allow microphone and speech recognition access. On-device recognition depends on the device and language being available.
Plate keyboard
Enter or correct the letters and numbers directly. This is also the fallback when a camera or voice permission is unavailable.

Browser camera and voice capabilities vary. The web app always offers plate entry and correction. Do not use the browser while driving.

Capture and hands-free behavior are still being verified on devices before public release.

Send a thoughtful note.

Open New message, choose the destination region and plate, and write your note. Confirm the destination before sending. An unclaimed plate cannot receive messages in Platd yet.

If Platd asks you to reconsider a heated draft, review the alternatives before choosing what to send. A send that cannot be confirmed offers a safe retry; check Sent rather than creating duplicate drafts.

When safely parked, open a message to read it. Hands-free incoming announcements are counts, never the text of an incoming message.

Choose what your profile shares.

Open My profile in Settings to edit your display name, bio, and their public visibility. These personal choices apply to all your current plates.

From My plates → Vehicle details, choose that vehicle’s make, model, color, appearance, and visibility. Each vehicle has its own settings. Save each form, then preview the saved public profile for the plate.

Filling a field does not publish it. Turn on only the fields you want people who know the plate to see.

Make a friend, then choose whether to share.

Send a friend request to someone you know. If you have a plate, you can choose one to introduce yourself with; a plate is optional. The other person must accept. Friendship alone does not share location.

To share, choose that accepted friend and a duration. Allow location access when prompted. Confirm the sharing status and stop it whenever you want. An unsuccessful location request does not mean a location was shared.

Read about the separate private safety trail.

Someone else claimed your plate?

Open Claim reviews & updates or the claim-review action under My plates. Select the plate and attach a readable registration photo. Check the selected image before submitting.

The photo is private. An authorized reviewer decides the claim and records a reason. Watch Account updates for the outcome. The app will not automatically award the plate because a photo was uploaded.

Stop unwanted contact.

Open the received message and choose Stop contact to prevent new messages and friend requests from that account. You can also choose Report this message for private review and track the response in Message reports.

Ready to try it?

Official access depends on release availability. The access page always shows the current installation options.
